Bernadette the Gypsy Chook …
Bernadette and Jenny’s Story another day In Paradise.
Jenny is a young German Backpacker who came and spent 3 months with us here on the farm to learn all about the day to day life of Pastured Eggs, farming and Dorper Sheep.
Bernadette is a young Chook who arrived here with the rest of her flock back in May and her job was to lay delicious eggs for all you egg delicious people to eat.
The story begins, as you all know we have had a very wet and cold winter. One early wet and cold morning young Jenny went out to open up the caravan and do nest box training with the young ladies who were with Bernadette, “nest box training means that for about 10 days every morning we go out to the caravan and teach the ladies to lay their eggs in the nesting boxes, which are situated up in the middle of the caravan” keep in mind that at this stage she wasn't named Bernadette, she was just another young pullet in the paddock, anyhow, to cut a long story short, Bernadette wasn’t doing well out there in the cold and wet, she was having trouble walking as one of her legs was not working and her foot was curled over and she was covered in mud and looking close to death.
Jenny brought her into Sick bay and nurced her back to health even teaching her to walk properly again, the two of them became inseparable, after a couple of weeks in sick bay, Jenny took her back out to her sisters where she would enjoy life being a pastured chook just like the others , at first she brought her back every evening a she was worried that she could not perch up at night. Bernadette would always come walking up to Jenny whenever she went out to the Paddock for a cuddle and some special chicken treats.
Time was fast approaching for Jenny to fly the coup and go travelling North to see the beautiful wildflowers and experience the Outback, she could not bring herself to leave Bernadette behind, hence she was Named Bernadette, so the decision was made that one lucky chook would fly the coup with her and go travelling the Wild West. Jenny And Bernadette will keep sending us updates and photos for us to share. Enjoy their journey.
